I quit MILK and coffee - So whats next?

I am officially off coffee. Been a couple of months/years in denial but from a couple of weeks ago when I started my health kick I wished away coffee for a while... cold turkey. I don't know but there is something about a hot milky cuppa. Around 12pm everyday I put my toddler to bed and sit down with my treat - A homemade, organic, full cream milk cappuccino! Ok so I don't think I was addicted to the coffee, personally I dont think coffee is that bad for you in moderation but I think I was addicted to the milk... I just love milk. There is something about it, I dont know, I just love it! And its not good...

Cows milk is known to have so many amazing health properties and we are instructed to give it to our babies when they turn 1. Its the next step from breast feeding or formula. But why? So we know its full of protein and calcium but why are we instructed to give it to our babies when so many people have trouble digesting it? In todays society lactose intolerancy is so common. I believe the reason why there are so many people lactose intolerant is because there is something missing in the milk we are drinking to help us digest it. All milk that we buy from the supermarket whether it be organic, non organic, homogenised or un-homoginised... It has been pasteurised!! Its illegal to sell milk that hasn't been pasturised? Why? I dont know, ask the big dairies... They will tell you that it has to be because of germs, contaminants etc but I ask why can we buy unpasturised goat's milk? Why can we buy unpasturised sheeps milk? Its totally a political thing but I wont go into that now. When milk is pasteurised it is flash heated, it is believed that no nutrients are lost but this is wrong. Raw milk is made up on lactose and lactase. Lactase is in the milk to help us digest the lactose. When raw milk is flash heated (pasteurised) the lactase is removed therefore we are only left with the lactose which we cant digest properly. With this, we barely absorb the calcium in cow's milk, but to make matters worse, it actually increases calcium loss from the bones. Cows milk along with alot of other animal products are acidic. Milk acidifies the body pH which then triggers a biological correction. Calcium is an acid neutraliser and we have the most calcium in our bones. So whatever calcium goes in is then sucked out to neutralise the acidifying effect. And there you have it, it then leaves in your urine and you are left calcium deficit! Hmmmmm... doesnt look good. To go with that, now there have been many scientific studies that have shown an enormous amount of detrimental health effects directly linked to milk consumption including, asthma, increase fracture risk, colic, iron deficiency, food allergies, cancers, contaminants, diabetes, osteoporosis and the scariest of them all - INFERTILITY!
It's a scary thing... But the bottom line is, we just don't need it! It has become a staple in society and we must be aware; milk today is a PROCESSED FOOD! There are many nutrient dense foods that can help us to meet our calcium, potassium, riboflavin and vitamin D requirements with ease and without health risks. Almonds and leafy greens are a great example! If you think you cant live without a milk drink there are many cows milk alternatives that are easy to make; almond milk, cashew milk, brazil nut milk, coconut milk and rice milk. Stay away from SOY milk, its worse than cows milk as far as I'm concerned.

So what next? I cant tell you to stop drinking milk, and stop giving it to your children. Thats your decision but I don't think I will ever go back and I would never let it become a staple in my children's diet. Don't get me wrong; if I am at a cafe and the only thing that will keep my daughter busy is a babycino then one every now and then I hope wont hurt her and for me this winter I will be enjoying the alternative hot drinks listed below:

DANDELION ROOT TEA - My new found coffee! My naturopath got me onto this as it stimulates the metabolism, increases energy and is a fantastic liver support. It tastes a little like coffee and you can add your choice of milk with it. I just love it! I buy the tea bags that are a blend of chicory root and dandelion from my local health food shop.

MOTHER EARTH CHAI - This is an amazing caffeine free blend of herbs and spices to give you a sweet taste of relaxation. This tea is truly bliss. I simmer it for 20 mins with some rice milk and it is the perfect morning tea or night cap. You can buy it here.

ANY HERBAL TEA - In resent months I have become a total herbal tea phene. I love sipping on and breathing in yummy herbs. My fav's are peppermint, fennel, lemon and ginger. YUM!

What are your coffee alternatives for this winter???

Today I will become a gardener!

Ok so I have to admit I have spent many years uninterested in gardening, purely because gardening with my mum almost always consists of weeding and when I say weeding, I mean big weeds... Long hours of pulling weeds out and getting your hands dirty and to be honest, that kind of hard work isn't for me! I do have some lovely memories of picking broad beans and snow peas with my dad when I was little in our garden, to think that we grew those yummy crispy little things to enjoy was so satisfying.

Then when we moved to our place on the beach it was more like a holiday resort with no room for planting veggies, but lots of room for weeds to grow through the palm trees! Thats when my fear of gardening set in! Why would you spend all your days weeding just for something to look good? Who cares?
Then I met my husband Andrew and he is a keen gardener. As I've mentioned before, his wish is to live out on a property and be self sufficient; he would have his goat, chickens, bee hive and lots of babies... Well me? Nahhhhh... I am getting more used to the thought of the goat and the bee hive and the chickens but definitely not the "lots of babies" part and I need people around me! I need to be social! I love having all my friends on call for a play date and a chai. Maybe, I could live in an eco community on the beach as long as we had lots of dance parties! Haha

Andrew is definitely the gardener of the family. I have always left it to him, he is great! We don't have much of a yard and hardly any sunshine but he sprouts so many things on the kitchen bench and then does all the fun work in planting and bringing it to the dinner table. I do love his passion for it but never thought it would be my thing.
This week though, I have had an itch, something has finally clicked in me that wants to get down, get my hands dirty and plants some stuff! Today I was at the farmers markets and found some beautiful little organic sprouts of kale and english spinach and I couldn't resist buying them. I am so excited to get them into the ground and grow my own little baby greens! So today, I WILL BECOME A GARDENER! I will put my Mimco bag to the side, I will take my jewelry off and I will get my work boots on and get my hands dirty! Today I will grow myself some greens!

Teething Terrors - 3 things to calm your baby NATURALLY!

It seems that teething is the talk of the week! Late night escapades, running noses, winging, crying, nappy rash, dribble and lots of cuddles... TEETHING SUCKS! And it goes on forever...

When our baby first began the teething journey my husband looked at me and said; "I thought teething only lasted 2 weeks." Hmmmm, I cracked up in histerics. How many teeth do you think they get? How long is this going to take? Yes, kids really don't finish getting all there teeth until about 12 years old, if they are lucky. And then right in the middle of the hardest part of high school they are hit in the face with the toughest ones, the wisdom teeth. It never ends for the poor little things and what can we do?? We can only do a few differnet things... We can cuddle them, calm them or drug them. Or all 3; What ever you choose as you are the parent.

For me, I chose not to drug them. As you can tell already I am into a more natural approach. Don't get me wrong, I think there is a time and a place for everything and if your child is in absolute agony and you have tried everything to no avail then that might be the next step. We just haven't reached that place yet, and I am so thankful for that. I dont know whether P is just an absolute trooper or whether I am a tuff mum but either way these are the 3 things that have worked absolutely amazingly for us. In 17 months we have conquered 9 teeth, 1 molar , minimal nappy rash, and 1 runny nose and I'm sure its because of these 3 things;

1. Amber Teething Necklace. At first I wasnt sure how this would work but a friend of mine, Emily @ My Life Bohemian  had one on her son and it seemed to be the thing to do so I bought a cheapy online here. From 6 months old I have never taken it off. It has been absolutely amazing! And I can't shout more highly about it! I'm sure it has been the saviour of all teething woes. Amber is a natural analgenic and  it works as pain relief. So these arn't just for babies; if you have a headache, wear one... If you get body aches, wear it all the time!

2. Brauers teething relief; I used this a few times but not too often. It is a very safe homeopathic remedy that you can purchase at the healthfood shop. I found it quite effective and still have it in the cupboard.

3. Healing concepts Children's Infusion tea. I only found this herbal calming tea a couple of weeks ago and its great! The best thing is that it is made by a naturopath who is a mum and has designed a herbal blend specific to children. The herbs are safe, calming and soothing for tummy upsets, teething and crankiness. And it smells devine. I wont deny that I sipped on a cup the other night myself before bed. I have been giving this to P all week while her molars are coming through and It's great! You can buy it here.

WOTNOT - Eco friendly, biodegradable and organic products!

Shop now
Shop now
I found WOTNOT when holidaying at my mums, down the coast in my favourite organics store; Saltwater Organics. It was in the heat of summer and I was looking for a sunscreen for my babe. When I went into the store they stocked a whole range of natural sunscreens. As I was scanning the shelves the WOTNOT naturals 30+ sunscreen caught my eyes. I just loved the name, such a great idea. So I took it to the counter and asked the owner what the best natural sunscreen was to buy and without seeing it in my hand she told me her favourite was the one made by WOTNOT. So I was sold. I took the sunscreen and went on my merry way to the beach. I have heard many stories about babies getting second degree burns from having a foot hanging out of the shade in the beaming hot sun and it has stuck with me for life. We spend alot of time in the sun so we need to have something that works. When starting out with natural products you always wonder if they are going to stay on and work. Having a small baby to test it on is a bit scary but after a couple of hours in the sun, in and out of the water we were burn free! It was fantastic! It is quite a thick cream which is super moisturizing and I love it for myself also.

Baby wash
After our beach adventure I went home to my beauty therapist of a mum and showed her our latest natural purchase and she tried it. With a bit of a shocked expression on her face she started reading the ingredients... She looked up and then said; "Cassie, this is better than most face creams! You should be using this! It's fantastic!" When she says face creams, she means better than the expensive brand creams that are lining our walls on the department stores? YES!!!! The ingredients in the WOTNOT naturals family sunscreen are better than the expensive chemical fixed brands that you and I have been wasting our money and time on for years!

WOTNOT naturals was started by two mums on Sydney's Northern Beaches that wanted to give their children the best start to life! They have a strong passion for toxic free living and they have teamed together to bring us a brand of natural products for our families. These two fabulous ladies have created a brand that we as parents can feel safe to put on our babies skin!
They know WOTNOT ingredients to include, they know WOTNOT's good for us... so why not try WOTNOT?
The company is great and I love to buy products from people with a great passion for living! The best part about this company is that everyone that works in the warehouse are mums. They all time share their positions so they can spend the most time with their families. They are a brand that cares!

Now, all the baby products we use in our house are WOTNOT. We never have nappy rash, We never get sunburnt! And what makes it better is that I gave some WOTNOT wipes to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago that's baby had very bad nappy rash and severe red dry rash all over his face from wiping it after meals. She thought he had eczema. After 2 days she called me and said that all rashes and skin abrasions had totally gone! AMAZING! Their products are REAL! 100% Natural! Products are free from: artificial fragrance, petrochemicals and mineral oils, lanolin and phthalates , soap, sulphates & other drying agents, parabens, petrochemicals & glycols and other commonly used ingredients that can be irritating or drying to skin. All products are safe!!!

And they don't only have products for babies! I have been using their naturally nurturing facial wipes for a couple of months now and they are brilliant! They even remove heavy eye make up. I do alot of dance performances and getting heavy make up off at the end of dances in a hurry is a nightmare. Sometimes I had no choice but to use the toxic wipes that line our supermarket shelves and my face would be covered in a red raw rash that night. Now with WOTNOT facial wipes there is no rash, no irritation, just moisturised make up free skin. LOVE THEM! With that they have brought out a fantastic and reasonably priced Vegan Make up brush set you must also check out!

We want you to try these fantastic products as we think you will love them just as much as we do so we would like to offer 10% OFF your WOTNOT products purchase with coupon code WOTNOT123 at checkout.
You can purchase all WOTNOT natural products from our online store;
Naturally nurturing facial wipes
Vegan Make up brush set

Totally Inspired - 10 things I love about MY MUM!

Meet my Mum! My mum is truly an inspiring person! She is the most selfless, hard working, strong minded person I know! I love her so so much! My mum grew up in a family of boys, I don't know if that's where her strength came from but It is truly something to aspire to. She has taught me so many things. She has fought my every battle. SHE IS AMAZING!

10 things I love about my mum:

1. Selfless! My mum is so selfless! She would do absolutely anything for anyone without expecting anything in return. This is including anyone she meets in the street. Sometimes I think she's crazy. She would go without everything for us!

2. Bargain buyer expert! One of the best things my mum has ever taught me is that it doesn't matter what it is but if you are saving more money than you are spending, then it is a total bargain! This may get us into a little trouble sometimes but it's definitely a good excuse to shop in a sale.

3. She is so nice to people she doesn't know. Sometimes this is frustrating to me if we are in a hurry but it shouldn't be. My mum will stop and talk to anyone in the street. She is so caring. She could talk forever and I love that about her!

4. Hard working!!! I can call my mum from anywhere in the world to ask her a question and she will find out for me. I mean, I hang up the phone and within 5 minutes I am getting a call back with the answer. She goes to the end of the world for me, i am so appreciative.

5. Great saver! My mum is the best at saving money even when there isn't much around. She is so good at locking money away and getting ahead.

6. Makes great decisions! When my mum was 16 years old she bought her first house. This is so cool! She new that is was a smart decision, she new it would pay off and it did. It rose in price by 1600%... AMAZING!

7. Fun! My mum is so much fun! We have had so many fun times together. So Many funny memories. When I had friends over as a teenager she would always sit down and chat with us. It is great!

8. Strong! When my dad passed away 7 years ago it was a really hard time for us. It was a really hard time for my mum as he was her buddy, they worked together 24 hours a day and all of a sudden he was gone. She stepped up to the plate as both mother and father and has been an amazing power of strength for the family.

9. Always a story to tell! My mum always have a good story to tell. Some stories are from way back when and they are hilarious. My mum has had so many amazing times in her life and I love hearing her share them!

10. She is ALWAYS right! (This one is for you mum, haha)... I try to never admit this but every time I get something wrong, She quickly reminds me... "Cassie, I told you I'm always right!" I just laugh as sometimes I know I am right but she's my mum and she can win!

Happy Mothers Day!

"Mother is the home we come from. She is nature, soil, ocean." - Erich Fromm, psychologist.

It's mothers day! Yay! The second mothers day for me and I am currently in bed comfortably while I listen to my amazing husband and babe in the kitchen making me brekky! What a life... It's the one day that all mothers can lay back and lap up some attention. The one day that we can say NO to changing the nappies, NO to picking up clothes off the floor, NO to washing, NO to washing up and NO WAY to winging kids! It's the one day that we can say YES to sleeping in, YES to breakfast in bed, YES to flowers and YES to lots of cuddles from the ones we love!

Being a mum is such an unbelievably rewarding thing but it's also a super tuff job too! Mum's are the BEST so today put your feet up, let your children wait on you hand and foot and Enjoy it!

Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing mums out there!!!!

Totally Inspired - Meet SACHAS!

Have you ever met someone that beams that much good energy that you walk away feeling like a better person, empowered and totally inspired?? Well today was the day for me. Lately I have had some amazing opportunities to meet some incredible people. I love it! I love the passion that comes from people who have been inspired to do good! Today there was more!

Asha (my sis) and I were off to the Mind body and Spirit festival to Listen to seminars, raw food demos, check the products and meet up with a friend of Asha's; a boy. To put it plainly, I had woken up on the wrong side of the bed; tired, grumpy and not interested in conversation. So we got to the expo and met the boy. By the end of the day, this boy had taught me so much by just being himself. It was incredible. I am not only feeling alive again, I am so excited for what is going to happen next.

Meet Sacha; a young guy with a big Dream. A big dream for Life! Sacha is an entrepreneur in his own right. Sacha went through a tough time in the later years of high school and when he hit rock bottom, he made a decision to be a better person, he made a decision to be something, he made a decision to live it and do it! With this came his brand Sachas; to inspire people of the world to make the same decision. Then came his foundation; Sachas Love. He began writing a book at age 17, started his own publishing company and then published his first book; Teens Big Dreams at the age of 20 which has amazing reviews. He holds workshops all around Australia inspiring teens to have big dreams! Not only that, now he has a Fashion label. Sacha has built an empire at 22 years old and more ideas are evolving every minute! This guy is amazing! Sachas website is awesome. If you are anyone, you should check it out, sign up to his daily inspirational text messages, attend a workshop and read his book!

I absolutely love inspiring others but sometimes I find it hard to inspire myself; whether it be feeling tired or feeling like there is too much going on, it all brings negative energy and we don't want that.. We want the positive stuff, ALWAYS! I was lucky enough to spend the whole day with Sacha and I seriously learnt so much by just walking around with him. Here are a few things I picked up along the way:
  • Be confident and stand up straight; confidence brings a great presence and starts conversation.
  • Smile! If you smile, people smile back. A face tells a thousand words, a smile doesn't only make you feel good but it makes others around you feel good too.
  • Always introduce yourself confidently, use eye contact and ASK THEIR NAME: I have a bad habit of avoiding introductions when I am tired. I noticed every person Sacha spoke to; whether it be a stall holder, an speaker/performer or a customer was worth knowing and talking to. Sacha has this presence that makes people want to talk to him and he listens so intently because he us genuinely interested.
  • Ask questions and Listen : Everyone has a story. If you ask someone a question and listen to the answer, it shows you are interested and that makes a connection and also shows you care. People don't ask many questions anymore, they should.
  • Don't use the words "but", "maybe".  If you use these words it means your hesitant, don't be hesitant! Be confident! You are right.
  • Do what makes you happy!!! If you are happy and passionate about something you will share your love so easy. Don't be afraid to take a chance. If it is your dream - just DO IT!
With these great tips that just came out in Sacha's body language and presence; came so many amazing stories, studies, books, quotes, all about why the love of yourself and your own life is so important to be totally fulfilled.
Life is such an amazing thing and it's yours to own! Love it! What are you waiting for? CHOOSE LIFE, LIVE IT, DO IT!

RECIPE - Savoury Slice... Recipe by Rikai

This great recipe is from a beautiful friend of mine. We were "first" friends, spending almost every waking hour together from when I was born, 9 months after... Dressing the same (I would call her every morning and ask her what she was going to wear and then wear the same), most people in town thought we were twins (Well I'm not sure if they did but I would pretend)... So many fun times and memories and now we have found the same healthy passion for amazing REAL FOOD!

This recipe is not a quiche and its not a pie... its a slice and it is beautiful! When Rikai first sent me this protein packed recipe to try I thought it was super cool because you don't see many savory slices around and this is so easy... Anyone can make it!

500gms Almond Meal
1 Egg
2 Tbsp of Olive Oil

Mix well. Pre heat oven to 180c. Place a sheet of baking paper in a large casserole dish, poor base onto paper and press in with your palm.

I use whatever vegetables I have in the fridge - pumpkin, sweet potato, broccoli, zucchini, tomato, basil leaves.
4 Eggs
Half a cup of coconut milk (dairy, goats or almond milk)
Goats Fetta

Steam the pumpkin and sweet potato until firm then place all the vegetables on top of the base.
Beat eggs and milk well in a separate bowl then poor mixture over the vegetable. Crumble goats feta over the top of slice. Place in oven for 30 minutes or until cooked through and golden brown.
Serve with a light salad.

Try and use organic where possible :  )

I cook this dish on a monday night with all our left over vegetables, it makes a great dinner and also great to have in the fridge for a meal on the run.
