Real food for baby - My Top 7 Products to get you started

So it has come a time that my baby wants to eat (I know right, how dare he?!?! It's so messy!!!)... I have been holding off for as long as I can, simply because I really wanted to wait until he was 6 months old and the fact that it can take so much time and be so messy! BUT the boy wants to eat, he is screaming out for it, literally!!! He goes totally crazy every time we put any food near our mouths and he is waking all through the night... So yes I think it's safe to say he is ready. He's 6 months today, and even though he has tried a couple of things, I will knuckle down and get into this feeding him real food business.

I wanted to share with you my top products I think are great for making life easier and getting the good stuff into our little ones.

1. Mocka Original Wooden Highchair : IN LOVE! I love any wooden high chair but this one is great as it is good for a very small baby right up until they grow into toddler-ville eating and beyond at the dining table. WEARING: Summer essentials!

Yes, I know my "wearing" posts have been few and far between and I have no other excuse than I just don't feel that great so taking pictures of myself is not my favourite thing at the moment.
I am living in rotation of a few outfits and they are the essentials; I love a comfy pair of pants, a plain T shirt and a pretty colourful scarf. It's got to be easy to move in and breast feeding friendly.
This week I was lucky enough to step into Sussan by myself (YES!!!!! I went shopping without children hanging off me, I was free!!!!). I have always known Sussan for their pyjamas, every year since before I can remember, without fail, I have opened a beautifully wrapped Christmas present from my grandma of amazing (yet offensively oversized by my Mummar as that's what grandmas do) pajamas! The pajamas have always been so comfortable andso gorgeous but I never looked any further into what clothing they stocked as if my grandma shopped there, then it must be a grandma shop.
Wasn't I surprised when I walked into this womens clothing store that is full of summer colours, style and clothing to suit any body type and any age group. I was in heaven, I had such a great time skimming the wracks for the latest patterns and trends. But I just couldn't go past this pair of pants; are they jeans or are they the comfiest lounge pants I've ever put on? Hmmmmmmm who cares?!?! They are amazing!!!! I can't take them off, they are so light and feel like wearing trackies, pair them with a simple summer tee and some bright accessories and I'm good to go, ready for summer.

Disclaimer: I was gifted vouchers thanks to Sussan for this fun shopping experience.

RECIPE: Ricotta hash, with Poached Egg and Smoked Salmon from EFF + my Summer menu experience

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to enjoy a 3 day educational cleanse from the lovely people at Eat Fit Food. It was pretty amazing to say the least! As I've mentioned before I am a big fan of Eat fit food; its REAL FOOD, portioned controlled to feed your body with goodness. It simply and deliciously makes life easier!
They are now serving their Summer menu and it is out of this world! Think brown rice porridge, Prawn Linguini, Grilled Salmon, quinoa salads, the works! I have attached a couple of pics at the bottom for you to salivate over. Now here's a yummy brekky recipe for you.

Eat Fit Food’s Ricotta hash, with Poached Egg and Smoked Salmon
4 portions

What you will need….
•4 eggs (for poaching)
•2 tbsp vinegar
•8 slices of smoked salmon
•12 asparagus spears – lightly blanched in some boiling water
Ricotta hash –
•4 eggs (separated)
•200g ricotta
•120g wholemeal flour
•50 ml of rice  milk
•Pinch salt
•Pinch baking powder
•A handful of fresh dill – a few extra sprigs for garnish
Method….
Ricotta hash
1.Pre heat oven to 160 degrees
2.Separate egg yolks and whites
3.Mix egg yolks, ricotta, flour, milk, salt, baking powder, and finely chopped dill in a large mixing bowl
4.Whisks egg whites in a separate bowl until light and fluffy – make sure bowl is dry and clean!
5.Add ¼ of the egg whites to the ricotta mixture
6.Spoon 2 tbsp of mixture onto a medium heat non-stick fry pan with a little olive oil. Cook both sides until golden
7.Remove from heat, place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake in the oven for 6 minutes
Poached egg
1.Bring 10cm of water in a saucepan to almost boil. Add vinegar (this helps the egg whites to congeal easier)
2.Crack one egg at a time into a small cup, and then gently drop the egg into the water. With a spoon, nudge the egg whitescloser to their yolks
3.Cook for approximately 2 minutes or until the egg whites are cooked
4.Gently lift eggs out of pan with a slotted spoon onto some baking paper to remove excess water
Plating up
1.Place ricotta hash onto plate, stack asparagus, smoked salmon and poached egg on top, then garnish with a little dill.
TIP – always use fresh eggs, not only are they higher in nutrition and flavour, they also hold together better when poaching.
 ENJOY! X

An Intervention of the plastic toy variety!

This is happening! This is really happening!

When dreaming of having children; I always pictured a perfectly tidy house, with perfect beautiful bedrooms, with perfect little children's toys in their perfect little spots. It was the picture of perfection, no mess, no fuss. Just pure family perfection.
Yes I know I was in dream land but it was a good picture right?

The problem is that what comes with children are birthdays, Christmas, any excuse for family and friends to offload billions of pieces of plastic that our children (and our houses) don't need! Which in turn, leads to so much mess and so much crap!* As I look around my home, its hard not to feel like we are drowning in a sea of plastic and it just makes me angry! It makes me ask, are other kids houses the same? When does it stop?

So instead of facing the problem, being by myself I packed up the kids and we headed down the coast to my mums for some down time.

After a couple of days of sanity relief I asked my good friend; Amber from Ronnie Jones how she does it... How does she have 2 children and her house is only full of beautiful things, beautiful wooden toys with no plastic in sight! It is amazing!
The answer; she doesn't let it in her house and she has made it very clear to her friends and family that she will pass any gift on that is of this variety. Yes, I need to do this so my house doesn't look like it has been burgled with the plastic monster!!!!

When we make our way back to our home there will be an intervention...
Before we left for the south coast we introduced the concept of outdoor toys; all the bright pink plastic ride on toys are out side in the yard to stay outside and to play with outside in the yard.
When I get back to Sydney everything else will be sorted; there will be a craft draw, an activity draw, broken toys that may go into recycling, and toys that will go to families in need. It will feel good and it will be cleansing! From now on, we will live in simpleness;

So all our beautiful friends and family out there, we know you may have our best interested at heart, but please refrain from buying anything of the plastic variety*.

* crap; yes I said it!
* Except Lego of cause; we love Lego. Haha

I am grateful...

This week has brought another stretch of weekday widow-dom... Mr A (my husband) is back on a promotion course for a month with work where he will only be home on the weekends. From the beginning of our relationship, he has been back and forth away with work; jobs that are dangerous and jobs that are not so dangerous. Thats the thing with being in the military, you never really know what the next job is and you never really know where the next place you will be living. I have always been so independent so him being away has never affected me too bad. That was until we had children; with kids, it is very different. It's nice to have someone to share the day with, help feed and bath the kids and get them into bed. It's a kind of sanity relief. And Toddlers don't quite understand where daddy is and why he is not home. Its exhausting!

This year, I won't lie, it has been really hard!!! We have moved house, then almost moved to Perth. I had complications with my pregnancy, a new baby that was suspected to be very sick, now transitioning to 2 children and totally struggling with my weight, life is a roller coaster ride.

Not having too much family around, I have lent on some of the amazing people around me, they are mums and I am so grateful to have you around!
I am grateful for my mum, my best bud mums. I am grateful for the playgroup mums, the park mums and the mums that just call me up to see if I'm ok. All of you are amazing and I thank you for being you!

How do you go on your own?

Eat Fit Food’s 20 Summer Slim Down Tips

Today I delve into a 3 day educational eating plan with Eat fit Food. Why? Because I need to loose weight! Not just a little bit, alot! My body is not doing its thing, its stuck on repeat and the thought of Summer coming along at full steam ahead is freaking me out. I am feeling the push to get on the right track to get my body working properly and feeling amazing! I need this for me! So if you are needing a bit of inspiration to get you on the right track, check out these fabulous tips from Eat fit food . It’s time to look and feel fabulous again. Let’s do it!

Eat Fit Food’s 20 Summer Slim Down Tips:

1
Buddy up
Create a network to help you through the journey, whether it is through social media or your neighbours. Having a support network to keep you motivated and upbeat is vital.
2
Take a before and after shot
Taking progress pictures are a great way to keep yourself motivated and seeing how far you have come.
3
Fail to plan = plan to fail – get your goals on paper
Preparation is vital as it prevents you from reaching for unhealthy convenience snacks and foods when hunger comes a-knocking.
4
Outline an achievable fitness schedule
Exercise at least two to three times per week with weights or body-weight exercises. Regular exercise has many benefits: increased strength and muscle tone, elevated energy levels, improved immune system function, reduced stress levels and much more.
5
Clean out your pantry
Get rid of unhealthy foods in your house then you will be less tempted to binge on calorie-dense processed foods.
6
Eliminate processed foods/whole foods only!
Eliminate 'bad carbs', such as white breads, cakes and biscuits. They have no nutritional value and are broken down to sugars in the body which then turn into fat. Swapping 'white' carbs for whole grains may lower your risk for heart disease by 33%.
7
Eat Healthy fats
Eat healthy fats such as avocadoes, coconuts, raw nuts and seeds, olive oil and coconut oil. These fats will help your body absorb nutrients, including vitamin A, as well as improve skin complexion and sleep.
8
Don’t skip breakfast
Over half the population skip breakfast, leading to consuming more unhealthy food later in the day.
9
Shop at your local food market
Eating produce that is grown locally has a shorter time between harvest and your table, and it is less likely that the nutrient value has decreased.
10
Limit alcohol consumption
Aim for 5 alcohol free days per week. Excessive alcohol leads to an abundance of empty calories, weight gain and numerous other health problems.
11
Drink more water
A dehydrated body cannot effectively burn fat. Women should aim for 2 litres of water every day. Men should aim for 3 litres a day. Not to mention, you feel better when you're drinking enough water every day.
12
Pick low Glycemic Index foods
Swap potato for sweet potato, fruits with high anti-oxidant levels, including blackberries, blueberries, kiwi and strawberries. Low GI foods are digested slowly, avoiding the sugar spike and give you long lasting energy.
13
Avoid caffeine
Avoid caffeinated products where you can, including coffee, tea and fizzy drinks. These are all very acid forming and prevent nutrient absorption in the body.
14
Drink water with lemon
Drink a cup of water with lemon when you wake up every morning. This is a great way to kick-start the metabolism and help to detoxify the body.
15
Stay positive
It takes more energy to be positive than negative, to be optimistic than to be pessimistic. Choose to consciously be optimistic and positive and you will attract more good things in life.
16
Tick something off your bucket list
Achieving something from your life-long to do list makes you realise that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.
17
Prioritise your sleep
A lack of sleep not only affects your mood and concentration, but it can also make you put on weight as it slows your metabolism down. Make sure you are getting at least 7 hours of rest a night to maintain a healthy and happy body.
18
Eat a rainbow
By eating at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits a day from a variety of colours, you can reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease by 30%, lose weight, and enhance your immune system so you don’t get sick as often.
19
Leave the car at home for a day - MOVE
Brisk walking is great for maintaining flexible joints and strong bones, and adds to more calories burned throughout the day.
20
Have fun – set aside time for play + SMILE
Setting aside time for play benefits your health tremendously. It's great for reducing stress and adds to more calories burned too!

Blooming baths - A must have for new mums + your chance to WIN one from Ruby & Cruise

Have you heard of the blooming bath yet? Its a very fancy yet very practical bloom to help bath your baby safely and it really works exactly that way. It's a big soft squishy flower that is made to fit perfectly in a sink or tub that you can place your baby on to wash them. I was first made aware of the blooming bath by a lovely new mum Sara, who is behind Ruby & Cruise, the Australian reseller. I had never in my life seen anything like it and I couldn't stop thinking how cute they were but I couldn't help but be sceptical to think they are just another bit of new mum "stuff" that would never be used. When I put it to the test to bath Sunny boy, I was very pleasantly surprised, it really works and it works in a way that cuddles your baby so that you can wash them properly and they are comfortable. Why they are also so amazing is that they are a great space saver as you wont need a baby bath. With a blooming bath, all you need is a clean sink to sit your blooming bath and baby in to give them a scrub. Then afterwards you throw it into your washing machine on spin cycle and they are pretty much dry. Very quietly, I would love one of these for myself, can you imagine just how comfortable a bath would be. It is made out of a soft foam, so as baby grows they are great for tummy time, as a play mat, a comfy support, an older child or adult bath pillow or even a wall hanging. They really are a perfect baby shower gift. Ruby & Cruise wraps these beautiful blooming baths up in gorgeous paper with matching coloured twine ready for delivery. I would highly recommend checking the blooming bath out from Ruby and Cruise when your looking for something to help you safely bath your baby or in need of a baby shower gift for a new mum.

Above are a few snap shots of Sunny and his buddies loving a blooming fun* blooming bath party.

* Yes, I think I'm funny!
