REAL FOOD REVIEW: Sadhana Kitchen

What a fun day we had; big girl was at kind and my little sis, Sunny and I made our way into the city to do a few things. One of those things was visiting the raw food cafe; Sadhana Kitchen. I kept seeing this little gem pop up on instagram over and over and always get sucked in by their incredible food pictures and even more incredible raw food creations. I have wanted to go here for a while and knowing that they are now serving the famous CocoWhip (dairy/gluten free coconut soft serve made with coconut water), we just HAD to go there. Keeping in mind that we had a bit of a sooky boy that hadn't had his day sleep and stresses as soon as he see's food but can't eat it, we did very well! The three of us shared the raw vegan tacos and the raw rana pad thai. Both were so yummy, the taco's though were OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! My mouth is watering thinking about them now, the 'mince' is made with a mixture of nuts and spices and its covered in the best guacamole I have ever eaten and drizzled with cashew cheese all wrapped up in a crispy lettuce leaf. Oh man it was yum! My little Sunshine definitely gave it the tick of approval wolfing down the pad thai made from zucchini and kelp noodles.

We sipped on ginger kombucha and then ended with a big cocowhip sundae; Asha (my sis) had the tim tam smash and I had the waggon wheel toppings... WOW! There are seriously no words, you feel like you are having something deadly naughty but it doesn't contain any of the nasty additives that the old fashioned soft serve does. Its a must try. I am so happy we made the time to visit this little diamond in the city full of goodness, I highly recommend making a trip to get the full experience and really enjoy good tasting raw vegan whole foods, its eye opening to see the creations. Everything just looks so dam good!

If you didn't know; we have struggled with Eczema in our house over the past year. When I stopped breastfeeding my llittle Sunshine was struck down with rash after rash, covered in the dredded eczema that is so commonly plaguely people now days. We would of course, have food days and then extreme bad day; he would scream and itch, it was really sad and stressful to watch, I just felt hopeless. We have since done a lot of work on his little gut and through food as medicine we have cleared most of it, we're still on the journey. In the midst of all the crazy-ness, one thing I was scared of was creams and skincare... I water to sooth his skin and give him some relief but I didn't want to put anything on him in the fear that it would aggravate it. I had been recommended that goats milk is amazing for the skin and healing eczema and I actually used to put a dash in his bath every now and then. REAL MUM REVIEW: The DéLonghi Multifry Classic

This is a sponsored post for DéLonghi and Digital Parents Collective

The New Year is now in full swing and most people set new goals starting the year with a fresh start full of motivation. Most people you talk to want to improve their health and the new year is the perfect start to set yourself up with healthier ways of eating. Most people that don’t eat too healthy express the reason is not having enough time… The common misconception is; “I just don’t have enough time to eat healthy”. This is not an excuse anymore as there are more and more appliances coming out that can help us mums in the kitchen to cut food preparation and cooking time by heaps! This means that we don’t have to be trained chefs to all eat home cooked, real food that tastes amazing with convenience.
This week I have had the opportunity to test-drive the DéLonghi Multifry Classic. It is an innovative kitchen appliance that combines low oil frying and a multi-cooker that meets the needs of everyone in the kitchen. It can fry fresh veggies with minimum oil rapidly and can feed the whole family and achieve exceptional cooking results with the ability to produce over 250 recipes including risottos, stews, pizzas, cakes, pies and chips. Sounds pretty cool right?

The DéLonghiMultifry Classic prides itself in enabling busy cooks to save time in the kitchen by producing an exciting variety of dishes all with exceptional taste and minimal fuss. The Multifry Classic promises to shake up routine meal preparation by bringing a world of cuisines to the user’s fingertips. I put it to the test with 3 family favourites; roast veggies, meatballs, and a stew.

ROAD TEST #1: Roast Veggies

It’s as simple as coating your chopped veggies in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, a sprinkle of sea salt, popping it all in the Multifryer and pressing the ‘on’ button. This was a game changer for me. My little ones LOVE roast veggies but they usually take so long to prepare and cook. Up to hours to cook some potato and pumpkin to get it tasting good. I love that is takes such little time and I could see myself using this for veggies on an almost daily basis.

ROAD TEST #2: Meatballs

Little meatballs are such an easy snack or meal for little kids; you can hide grated vegetables in them too if you want to boost their goodness. My kids love them and I usually make them in the oven, boil them or fry them in a pan, which can make a bit of a mess. I liked cooking the meatballs in the Multifryer because they came out well cooked and crispy. The kids were the first test pilots and thought they were great. I love the fact that I didn’t have a load of different pots, pans or trays to wash! A big win as a mum!

ROAD TEST #3: Lamb Stew

Being on a gut-healing journey with the kids, stews are high on the weekly menu list. I usually make my stews in the oven and it isn’t hard to prepare but it does take a long time to cook in the oven and hours to get it right. I found it was a lot quicker in the Multifry, I believe this is because of DéLonghi’s exclusive Surround Heating System (SHS) technology, which surrounds the food with uniform heat, making the Multifry Classic the most advanced low-oil cooking appliance available. I also love that it is like cooking in its own casserole dish, meaning so much less washing up and cleaning. This is awesome! So great to have such a small amount of washing up at the end of creating a huge meal.

My favourite things about the DéLonghi Multifry Classic:
  • Its cooks really quickly! Yes, it’s so fast, I love how much time you save by using it.
  • You use minimum oil so this means you can have fried quality food but not use a whole tub of expensive coconut oil so you’re saving money too.
  • I love the thought of using it through summer instead of turning on the oven and heating up the whole house. Along with that you’re saving power using a smaller appliance over the big oven.
  • It has a removable mixing paddle that gently mixes ingredients throughout the cooking process so there’s no need to manually stir ingredients.

The only thing I’m not too crash hot on is that it takes up so much room in the kitchen but then that is a good thing too as that means it can cook so much more. All in all I love this machine and can see it working for any busy mum in the kitchen. I highly recommend checking out the DéLonghi Multifry Classic.

RECIPE: Duck Liver Pâté

Oh Organ meats!!!! 6 1/2 years ago when I met my husband I was disgusted at the fortnightly smell of offal that came from the kitchen - Liver, kidney, bone broth, brains... All totally gross to me and not only gross but I thought of it as poor people food... Don't ask me why. I've never eaten alot of red meat, it didn't appeal to me but when I did I wanted only the "best bit", the most expensive, the muscle! Little did I know that the muscle is the least nutritious part and although packed with protein, the fats and organs hold the best bits! Through our families health journey I have been doing alot of reading on organ meats and their benefits to us and our children's ever developing bodies. THEY ARE AMAZING! So I have set out to get organ eating... I'm warning you now; the next few weeks recipes will be all about the fatty, affordable cuts of meat. Not because I want to gross you out, its because I want to open your eyes to the old fashioned traditional way of eating full fat meats that we have forgotten about and why we need to bring them back into our kitchens. They have fantastic health benefits and I want us all to eat a little of this glory food. And they taste great! As I am only slowly working my way into eating organ meats I instructed my REAL FOOD CHEF (my amazing husband) to make these recipes taste good, and I mean taste bloody AMAZING! The ideal way of eating these foods is to sear each side slightly and eat it rare but lets face it. When you are entering the world of organ meats you are not going to eat a raw liver... Well I am not! This recipe is so easy and only takes about half an hour to make at the most. If you are having guests over this will definitely impress.

How is our Pâté good for you??

Livers contain very high levels of several different important nutrients. They are very high in Vitamin A, Vitamin B12 and Folate. These 3 nutrients are extremely important for fertility and pregnancy so its great to eat it to up your levels. VItamin A promotes good vision, contributes to healthy skin, digestion and immunity. Vitamin B12 is great to increase your energy levels and improve mental functions. Folate is very very very important during pregnancy, it reduces the risks of birth defects and developmental issues in your unborn child so if you are pregnant, liver is the ultimate whole food supplement.
When you are looking for liver, buy the best sort you can afford. The liver is the filter of toxins so its a good idea to go for organic, free range and pasture fed. I got mine from feather and bone. They were fab!!

Real grass fed butter and cream - Little do people know that real grass fed butter and cream is full of nutrients that our bodies need. Yes it is saturated fat but this type of fat is good for us. It is a completely natural food essential to our health. When looking for butters and creams raw is best in my opinion but it is sometimes hard to find and alot of people have mixed feelings on it. Anything that comes from a cow should be grass fed. This is there natural food. If a cow is fed grains thats when problems start so try to go for a grass fed butter or cream, you can find this in your local organic or health food store.

Lets get cooking!

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes

300 grams of Organic Pastured Duck Livers
1.5 Onions
5 pieces of Bacon
Small Handful of each Rosemary, Parsley, Thyme, Oregano
1 Bay leaf
50 grams Butter or Coconut oil
100 grams Fresh Cream
Pinch Salt and Pepper

Remove the white sinewy bits from livers.
Preheat Oven to 220 Degrees
Melt butter into baking tray and then lay all ingredients on tray except the cream.
Bake for 15 minutes
Pull tray out from oven and place all ingredients into a food processor, adding in the cream. Whizz until mixture is smooth.
Poor mixture into small shaped dish and place into the fridge to set. Also tastes amazing warm!
Drizzle with melted butter or fresh herbs.
ENJOY! Seriously YUM!

BACK TO SCHOOL - Choosing the best lunch box for your child

With so many different lunchboxes on the market, it can be tough to choose one that suits your needs, so we enlisted the help of an expert. We asked Joanne from online health and wellness store Shop Naturally for answers to the 5 most commonly asked questions when choosing a lunch box.

Are BPA Free Plastic Lunch Boxes safe?

LunchBots lunch box
Let me start by briefly explaining what BPA is for those who may not know. BPA (or Bisphenol-A) is a chemical found in some plastics, canned food and even thermal cash register dockets. It is a known endocrine disruptor, which is the body system that runs your hormones. Many countries, including places like Canada, have banned the use of it, especially in baby bottles. In Australia, there is no ban, and the industry is self-regulated. In my store, I have a strict BPA Free policy for anything that touches food & drink, and that goes all the way down to the packaging of our tinned coconut milk. You may be surprised to know that many organic food companies place organic produce inside cans with this hormone disrupting chemical inside.
There’s a lot of media around whether BPA Free plastic is safe or not, and claims that the replacement materials are worse. After speaking with building biologist, healthy homes author and naturopath Nicole Bijlsma about this topic last year, here’s our recommendation when it comes to lunch boxes:
Most lunch boxes are made from #5 (polypropylene) and never contained the main BPA source, polycarbonate in them to begin with. Polycarbonate was used to make clear, hard plastic that looks like glass. Lunch boxes aren’t made out of these materials.
BPA Free or otherwise, plastic breaks down in extremes of temperatures, so keep them out of the dishwasher, the freezer and the sun.

I don’t like the idea of plastic in my kids lunch box. What are the best alternatives?

By far, the most popular choices in our store are the Lunchbots range. Why? They’re all stainless steel so there’s no plastic touching your food. Ever. The lids are snug and won’t let anything fall out but not leak proof for liquid, however we also have solutions for that.
U Konserve
They’re available in 2 different sizes and 4 different bento configurations for those kids who like their food kept separate.

What do you have that’s stainless steel and leak proof?

In a standard stainless steel lunch box, we have several options from the U Konserve brand with BPA Free plastics lids and a stainless steel base. There are also a variety of snack pots with screw lids for dips, yoghurt, dressing and more.
There is also a range of insulated food jars available that will keep left overs hot or cold for hours. Use them in summer for salads and in winter for soup.

What’s the best solution you’ve found for keeping food insulated?

The best way to keep lunch boxes cool until lunchtime is to pop them in to an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. Our favourites are the range from Fridge To Go. The ice packs live inside their own compartments so they don’t sweat and make the inside of your lunch bag wet. Genius. They insulate for up to 8 hours and we’ve provided real life photos on our website so you can see what fits inside.

Can I put my lunch box in the dishwasher?

If it’s plastic, we advise you not to. You’ll get more life out of them if you wash them by hand. If it’s stainless steel, you can do it as long as there’s no paint on the outside. For anything else, check the manufacturers details.

For me; 2015 is the year for fitness, fun and adventure! I want to bring my body up to its absolute optimum level as a mum and feel good having fun along the way. I am really motivated this year and my journey to optimum health is going well. I'm finally feeling good and having so much for energy to actually do stuff, like real exercise and having the motivation to keep doing it feels so amazing in itself.

A big motivation for the new year to get my butt moving was getting some new active wear; lets face it, I'm a woman, I love new clothes! Feeling good and comfortable in what your wearing to workout, I believe is a big part of how you can perform. There is nothing worse than your old tights slipping down your butt as your running or your boobs bouncing all over the shop. Its not fun so it doesn't work.
There are so many great active wear clothing lines out there now with so many options for everyone but it can be hard to find the right thing for your shape of body in the one store. Recently I was introduced to Elsa; an online store full of amazing fitness wear for every body!
One of the goals in setting up Shop Elsa, was to curate a collection of labels from both Australia and overseas which were inclusive in sizing; stocking AU size 6 – 26 and provided a great range of workout gear for women, regardless of their size or shape. This is a breakthrough it fitness gear as it can be really hard to find active to fit a larger size in sport shops as they usually only stock up a size 14, maybe 16. The lovely ladies at Elsa know that wearing workout gear which is comfortable and supportive, is a great incentive for getting moving every day!
In addition to activewear, Elsa also stock the No 1 selling sports bra in the USA, the Juno from Moving Comfort and a bamboo range which is perfect for relaxing after your workout or travelling. The Juno bra is so comfortable too! I love it.
Elsa stocks brands including; Abi and Joseph, Vie active, Katie K active, Moving comfort and more. I highly recommend you check out the latest gear at .

RECIPE: Creamy Walnut Chocolate Spread

As a mum, it can be easy to fall into the trap of buying the highly processed chocolate spreads. Kids love them and the marketing tells you they hold some health value. Problem is that is packed full of refined sugar and harmful additives that little bodies just don't need. It is really simple to make your own and the kids will love getting their hands dirty and helping you create fun food. This nut spread is a little different as it brings a walnut taste into it and it is so creamy, its delicious! I hope you like it!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Makes 1-2 cups

2 cups walnuts
1/3 cup coconut nectar
1 tbls cacao powder
2 tbls roasted carob powder
1/3 macadamia oil

Place all ingredients into the food processor.
MILL everything for 1 minute or until mixture is almost smooth. Use wand if needed to press ingredients down.
BLEND mixture for 10-20 seconds or until creamy.

Store in a jar in the fridge for up to 1 month.
